Dead Center, by Ed Kugler
I read this book quite a few years ago, and just got done reading it for a second time. I won’t spoil the contents to anyone who wants to give it a read but I will comment on a couple of things. Ed was a marine sniper. If you are at all interested in long range shooting, I would highly recommend this book. I was fascinated as it touches on the recon aspect of what Ed did.
I’ve read quit a few books dealing with the Vietnam war. In the beginning Ed states something to the effect that “It’s not just another ‘Nam book, it’s the best damn ‘Nam book you’ll ever read.”
And it is a very, very good book dealing with one aspect of the war.
In all the books I’ve read about Vietnam, the one thing that just perplexes me is how seemingly unorganized ...maybe that’s not the right term. How ‘seat of the pants’ many of the operations were.
Men volunteering for assignments they had no clue as to what they were going to be doing. Brave young men.
While there will always be the lingering question about the reasons for that war, one thing was for sure, those young men's patriotism was never in question.
Great book, read it.
